How are the calculations for the Boomer Death Counter made? Mortality rates are a bit of science and a bit of projection from current death rates. Of course the death rate will need to be altered based upon unforseen good or bad events (cure for cancer OR bird flu pandemic). In general, for each year of life there is a certain number of people who die. Actuarial science is used by the insurance industry to determine your odds of dying depending on your age and gender. As we age, the odds of dying increases steadily until our senior years where the death rate increases rapidly. For those in their 90's the death rate is roughly 50% and for those who exceed 100 it is about 95%. Currently, for those who reach 122 the death rate is 100% The figures provided in this clock give a rough estimate of the current rate of demise for the Baby Boomer generation. Our calculations will be adjusted as we see fit or from the input of those more learned in the actuarial sciences. The formulas we used varied between the USA Death Counter and the Canadian Death Counter to reflect the average life expectancy being 5 years longer for Canadians.
